Foods Dogs Should Not Eat - Keep Fido Away from these Dangerous Foods for Dogs

A recent report on the news got me thinking about substances that are toxic to our pets; you know - the foods dogs should not eat; dangerous foods for dogs.

The subject of the report was a substance found in TicTacs™ and many other sugar-free candies. Apparently, a woman's black lab had a propensity to sneak tasty morsels out of his master's purse, including TicTacs™ and Tums™.

I was glad to learn this, because there are many times I considered giving big French Sheep Dog a breath mint just to ... ah ... clear the air, shall we say. Somehow I think she would play the snob and stick her nose up in the air if I did offer them.

Thankfully, I never did.

It all seems kind of funny, a dog sneaking a breath mint. Kind of like a kid smoking behind the barn and trying to cover his breath. The difference is, this dog nearly died.

The substance xylitol, which is considered natural and an acceptable sugar substitute for humans, affects a dog's liver, as well as its insulin levels.

Although I am not in the habit of slipping Allie breath mints of any kind, tempting as it has been at times, I have to admit I wasn't aware they were among the foods dogs should not eat. So I decided to pass the information on to you.

If your dog has eaten anything that includes xylitol, you should call the NAPCC (the National Animal Poison Control Center). Their phone number is 888-4435.

What are some of the other dangerous foods for dogs? There are several items on the list of. See how many you know.

Foods Dogs Should Not Eat:

1. Alcoholic Beverages (no one really does this, do they?) 2. Avocado (good for your heart health -- bad for pooch) 3. Coffee/chocolate (and anything loaded with caffeine) 4. Macadamia nuts (I love 'em, but they can kill your dog!) 5. Raisins and Grapes (the skins can cause kidney failure within 24 hours) 6. Garlic & Onions (cats are probably even more sensitive to onions than dogs) 7. Salt 8. Yeast dough 9. Moldy and spoiled food (if you won't eat it, don't give it to your dog) 10.Raw salmon (If your dog has a raw diet, take special note!)

A really good discussion of this very subject was done on Martha Stewart's television show. She discussed the various dangerous foods for dogs with Dr. Marty Goldstein, a well known veterinarian. We put a video clip of that discussion on our dog blog, and you'll find it very informative.
